Our stop at Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming was planned as part of a travel day between the Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Black Hills area of South Dakota. It’s one of a handful of stops I didn’t want to pass up because I remember being here as a kid and I wanted to share it with the boys as well as visit again myself. My memories were that it seemed to take forever to get here but the sight was awesome once we did arrive. This day turned out to be a very, very grey day. The skies couldn’t have been more bland. I’d even commented to Dawnie while we were en route that a stormy sky could actually look quite interesting behind the monument but even that was not to be. Oh well…
The drive up to the monument itself is quite tight and with our RV in tow, we were advised to unhook at this parking area set aside for just this reason. It’s a good thing we did because we’d have had trouble navigating the tight roads further up. And as you can see, the skies weren’t improving. With the grey skies and rains earlier in the day we were told that there were currently not any climbers on the monument. Typically, weather permitting, there are always climbers scaling the monument. It’s a very popular attraction for climbers.
So, we looked around and took some pictures but didn’t spend a lot of time here since the weather was not cooperating. There’s a trail that circles the entire thing and is a bit over a mile in length. With the weather threatening, we decided to forego the hike. We had our lunch in the RV and headed on down the road. We did make a brief stop as we were leaving to watch the prairie dogs in a field they’ve dubbed “Prairie Dog Town”. There were hundreds of them across a very large field and it was entertaining to watch them but also to listen to them talking to each other.
Here are a few more photos from our brief visit…
